GitLab introduces general availability of direct transfer migration—making GitLab group migrations simpler and more reliable between instances.

Direct Transfer Migration Now Generally Available

We are excited to share that GitLab’s direct transfer migration capability is now generally available. This feature streamlines the migration of GitLab groups from one instance to another, significantly simplifying the process for project and team migrations.

Previously introduced as a beta, group migration by direct transfer allows organisations to securely and reliably move their groups and associated data between GitLab instances with minimal downtime and manual configuration. This capability is especially useful for enterprises consolidating environments or migrating between self-managed and GitLab.com instances.

The direct transfer method ensures that key resources such as repositories, issues, merge requests, and CI/CD configurations are accurately moved through the GitLab API and GraphQL. Unlike the traditional import/export method, it avoids the pitfalls of ZIP file manipulation and offers a predictable and traceable migration process.

As of GitLab version 17.1, the feature supports creating new direct transfer migrations and monitoring their progress via the user interface. With this release, GitLab administrators can confidently perform group migrations using a more controlled, observable approach, which previously was only accessible through beta testing or manual scripts.

If your team is looking to migrate GitLab groups seamlessly and efficiently, now is the time to explore what direct transfer can offer.
